ABOUT DR ALEX
LANDAU
They say that if you find a job you love
you’ll never work a day in your life.
Dr Landau is one of those few people who knew what he wanted to do from an early age, and he has loved every minute. He was that kid at school who enjoyed art and science and the only field in medicine that truly blends the two is plastic surgery. Every patient is different, and it is never boring. He individualises each case as its own challenge, both in the planning and technical application. Dr Landau is never happier than when he’s being creative, whether he’s holding a scalpel or a paint brush. He has an eye for detail and applies this quality in everything he does.
Plastic surgery is unique amongst all surgical disciplines in that it is the specialty of innovation and problem solving. There is often more than one solution to each problem and the plastic surgeon needs to be able to adapt and change the plan midway through a surgery if need be. Each operation is different and individualised for that specific patient. What will work on one patient will not necessarily be appropriate for another due to each person’s unique anatomy.
This uncertainty can be quite daunting to some where ‘routine’ is taught above all else, but to the plastic surgeon creativity and problem solving are their strength, which is why Dr Landau loves it so much. The challenge is to choose the correct solution for each patient. Dr Landau likes to review his pre- and post-operative pictures to see how he could possibly improve his approach. This activity has led him to become a master of his craft over the past 20 years and he encourages his trainees to do the same.
There are literally thousands of techniques to perform a facelift, breast reduction or flap reconstruction for a nose defect, and new techniques are being described constantly.

Dr Landau specialises in the surgical management of skin cancers, both at Groote Schuur where he runs the combined skin cancer clinic, as well as in private practice where he works with a team of dermatologists and oncologists to provide the best care for his patients. These are the most common cancers in humans and often occur on the face, presenting unique reconstructive challenges. He lectures widely in the field and attends many congresses to keep up to date on exciting developments, particularly with melanoma related immune therapies.

He is also part of the Cape Town Bariatric Clinic, a fully accredited multi-disciplinary weight loss clinic based at the Kingsbury hospital. Here, he specialises in body contour surgery after massive weight loss, which has become a sub-specialist field within plastic surgery. This involves body lifts, thigh and arm reshaping, breast lifts and augmentation, as well as face and neck lifting. Dr Landau also has many post-pregnancy body contouring patients where the same principles are applied.

A GLOBAL NETWORK
OF EXPERTISE

Plastic surgery is one of the most dynamic specialties and Dr Landau keeps up to date with the latest journals and frequently attends congresses. He has an international network of colleagues with whom to discuss complex cases and he often provides the same expertise to them.
Having trained both locally and in the UK, Dr Landau worked with world-renowned plastic surgeons, and he has brought this wealth of experience into his own practice as well as to those he teaches. He strives to improve the outcomes of his own patient’s surgeries while contributing to the field. For this reason, along with his love of teaching, Dr Landau maintains a sessional consultant position at Groote Schuur Hospital to help train young plastic surgeons.
He enjoys both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and does not see a clear distinction; the cosmetic appearance of a reconstructed ear or nose is just as important to the patient as an aesthetic surgical modification.
His private practice is based at the Life Kingsbury Hospital in Cape Town where he often interacts with other surgical colleagues to solve complex reconstructive challenges.

&
Dr Landau is happily married and the proud father of four children. When he’s not operating he loves to spend time with his family hiking in the forest, playing cricket, surfing, painting or relaxing together on the beach.
His approach to family, friends and patients is based on sincerity, honesty and discipline. Performing an operation on someone is a huge responsibility and privilege that requires the total trust and confidence from the patient, and he tries to treat each patient as if they were family.
